The wooden Pyramid of Kukulkan

The Pyramid of Kukulkan (El Castillo) is one of the most famous symbols of the Maya civilisation in the ancient city of Chichen Itza, Mexico. This monumental structure, with its unique geometry, stepped architecture and four grand stairways, inspired the client to commission a detailed wooden model. The LIGNO team was pleased to assist with this non-standard project and complete it within the agreed timeframe.
The model was made from natural pear wood at a scale of 1:132. It accurately reproduces the architecture and proportions of the original structure, from its distinctive stepped form and four stairways to details such as the Temple of Kukulkan with its columns and the three-dimensional figures of the Feathered Serpent.
Accurate reproduction of the architecture
One of the main challenges of this project was transferring the complex stone architecture of the pyramid into natural wood without losing its characteristic proportions and geometry.
The four stairways are oriented towards the cardinal directions. Each contains 91 steps. Together they make 364 steps, while the upper platform adds one more, symbolically corresponding to the 365 days of the year. This feature is one of the best-known examples of the connection between Maya architecture and their understanding of the calendar.
In the scale model, these proportions and the number of elements were preserved according to the concept of the original structure. As a result, the wooden pyramid is more than a decorative replica – it is a carefully crafted scale model of a historic landmark.
Natural wood for a complex model
Natural pear wood was selected for the Kukulkan pyramid model due to its fine, uniform texture, warm natural tone and excellent properties for precise machining. Its high density and lack of large pores make it possible to reproduce even the smallest architectural details with exceptional accuracy, including the crisp edges of the steps, monumental stairways and delicate elements of the sanctuary at the summit. The warm golden-honey tone of pear wood, with its soft silky sheen, evokes the appearance of ancient stone illuminated by the sun of Yucatan, giving the model a sense of monumentality, natural warmth and refined character.
For this project, natural wood was combined with modern precision machining and detailed hand finishing. The use of a high-precision CNC milling machine makes it possible to achieve the exact geometry of the numerous steps and tiers of the Kukulkan pyramid. Final hand sanding, precise fitting of the steps and application of a protective finish bring out the natural character of the wood, emphasising the golden sheen of pear and giving every element a refined architectural finish.
Custom-made wooden products
The Pyramid of Kukulkan is a striking example of a project where standard solutions simply do not work. Its complex multi-tiered geometry, scaled symmetry, hundreds of small repeating elements and the need to precisely preserve the proportions of the ancient original required an individual approach at every stage of design and production.
LIGNO specialises in the design and manufacture of unique, custom-made products made from natural wood – from large-scale architectural models and complex decorative objects to refined accessories and souvenir products. Combining advanced woodworking technologies with skilled handcrafting, LIGNO works with each client throughout the entire process: from the initial idea and 3D modelling to the creation of the finished product and delivery.
